Railroad track anvil on craigslist12/9/2023 ![]() I burned myself once on a piece of cast iron that had been buried in ashes for four hours. You need to anneal it - take it from the heat and bury it in a big pile of ashes, or - less desirable - sand. The simplest way to do it is to cook it on a gas grille until it gets red hot. (Charcoal is the next best way.) If you let it cool naturally, you are normalizing the steel that isn't good enough. You will need to remove the temper from the steel to make it flat and stay that way. ![]() You will notice your spring section is curved. One end (the end to be mounted at the base of the horn) needs to be square the other can be ragged for the time being, just be a little generous with your measurements. You may as well torch it, since you are doing it anyway. Depending on how long your track section is, you will need perhaps a foot to eighteen inches of spring. ![]() This is where the section of truck leaf spring comes in. The next step is to make a flat surface on the top of the anvil. Remember, dents and rust pitting on the surface of the spring will be transferred to the work, so try to find a smooth piece. You will also need about the same length of a truck leaf spring, so, while you are poking around, looking for a section of track, ask about a piece of spring, too. You can get by with eighteen inches, so that is in your favor. I can even show you places where surveying markers were made out of sections of track driven into the ground! You don't need a lot of track - two feet will be oodles. When they pulled the track up in my area, scraps were available everywhere. You might find pieces in scrapyards, auto repair shops, antiques shops, or various other places. In the country, especially in areas where there used to be railroad tracks, it is a little more doable. While there may be plenty of track there, I'm almost positive they don't want you pulling it up. That may be easier said than done, especially in more urban areas. Another example of learning some cool stuff after the original post.First, you find a piece of railroad track. Some had been there for who knows how long. I was also shocked to find out you could get in trouble for having some rail as the last shop I worked at was next to tracks and was littered with swapped out rails. Today I checked back and there is a semi done one for $25, that I could handle. There has been a number of people trying to sell rail pieces on the local CL. Should have known that a rail wasn't just a rail. There was some silly commercial extant back then that showed a cowboy hatted track worker carrying a whole section of rail on one shoulder-but someone pointed out, this would have been far less improbable in the old west days when they used 80-pound rail-still, that would be a mighty heavy load. ![]() Some of the old little used sidings had very old 80 or 90-pound rail. 139-pound is the only exact number that I can recall, but I think that we installed some reconditioned 110 or 115-pound rail in Virginia due to a lack of 139-pound. So far as I know that was the heaviest size rail in common use at the time. All else being equal, heavier rail gives a steadier platform and allows faster trains-plus it lasts longer.Īlmost all the new rail that we installed was 139-pound rail. When I worked for the L&N Railroad (35 years ago) I found that rail is identified by how much a yard of it weighs. If I decide to finish polish and/or mount it to a scaled stump, I'll add some more photos. When I got it done, I had to set up this photo. I used a bandsaw to rough in the shape, and used a Diamond X grinding wheel to level the surfaces, a diamond cutting wheel to slice the base to make the "feet", a 4 1/2" Pferd Polifan wheel to make the inside radii, then some flapdisks to smooth it all out, and a wire wheel to de-rust the rest. I took a 1/16th off the "sharp" side with a 7" grinder to level the top. The side with the sharp corner had a bit of a lip or burr. I don't know what kind of rail this is or how old it is, but the curved side and top looked worn in, rather than ground. There wasn't enough material to copy the heel, and the whole top is offset, so I worked that into the shape. The horn is modeled after the one on my Trenton anvil. I didn't need it, and may never use it, but that's never stopped me before. The 155lb Trenton anvil inspire the design. I wanted to, but never did anything with it until I saw the excellent one that Tuomas Soikkeli posted here recently. I got a small, butchered piece of rail track some years ago in a lot of tools that I bought. Rocket pop alani energy drink12/9/2023 ![]() ![]() Tastes like strawberry and slightly like watermelon. Obviously it isn’t being graded on the same scale as a Rolex Submariner so let’s just appreciate it for what it is. Overall I’d have to rate the Tag Heuer Aquaracer a 7/10 for what it is. Wearing a watch that costs a fraction of that is actually inviting because as a wearer, you get a reliable companion that you want to take you through all those type of moments in life. Ordinarily I wouldn’t advise taking a $10,000 watch on strenuous hikes, surfing, rough housing around the house with kids, or other activities. This watch is made to be worn and is pleasantly priced to give the wearer comfort in putting it to the test. What hasn’t changed about the Aquaracer is its reliability and durability. Volbeat rewind replay rebound download12/8/2023 Strong songwriting, skilled performances (I haven´t even mentioned the great and distinct sounding voice and vocals by frontman/guitarist Michael Poulsen or the many great harmonies and choirs on the album), and a professional and well sounding production. So "Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies" is a high quality release through and through. Sometimes even to the extent that some tracks are radio friendly mainstream heavy rock. When the tracks need to be raw and heavy, he makes them sound like that, but when a little sugar and polish is needed, Caggiano is also more than capable of producing tracks like that. Caggiano is a skilled producer, as has created a perfect sound for the material. The huge anthemic power ballad "The Nameless One" is a standout track too, but as mentioned above it´s hard to pick which tracks to give a special mention, as they are all high quality material. Off course "The Lonesome Rider" (featuring Sarah Blackwood from Walk off the Earth on guest vocals) deserves a mention too, as it was a "hit" single for the band. It´s such a solid release, that it´s actually a bit hard to pick highlights without feeling like you´re leaving out some tracks worthy of a mention, but to my ears some of the highlights are "Room 24" (fans of King Diamond should love this one), "Pearl Heart", "Lola Montez", and the great rocking "My Body". Because of the diversity of the material "Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies" is also an album which never gets tedious or feels one-dimensional. It´s a diverse release and in this case it´s a strength, as it all ultimately sounds like Volbeat, no matter which style they play. Stylistically the material on "Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies" ranges from 50/60´s rock´n´roll influenced heavy rock/metal, to melodic heavy rock/metal with a mainstream appeal, to quite heavy tracks like "Room 24" (featuring King Diamond on guest vocals), "The Hangman's Body Count", and "Black Bart". The band therefore went into the studio to record "Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies" as a three-piece with producer (and former Anthrax lead guitarist) Rob Caggiano, but came out of the recording sessions as a four-piece, as the chemistry had been so good between Volbeat and Caggiano, that the band asked him to join them as their permanent lead guitarist. There´s been one lineup change since the release of the predecessor as lead guitarist Thomas Bredahl was asked to leave Volbeat in November 2011. It´s the successor to "Beyond Hell / Above Heaven" from 2010. The album was released through Universal Music Group in April 2013. On Rewind, Replay, Rebound, Volbeat have cut down on the filler and maximized the hooks."Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies" is the 5th full-length studio album by Danish heavy rock/metal act Volbeat. ![]() They don’t stray far from their established formula, but do push the limits enough to keep things interesting. The Verdict: Volbeat have produced another fun and eclectic album with a plethora of potential hit singles. A few tracks polish off some of the edge Volbeat had in the past and though they are ridiculously catchy, are also somewhat saccharine. The Bad: The 38-second “Parasite” feels a bit gimmicky, basically amounting to a short section of what could have developed into a really good song. Elsewhere, “The Awakening of Bonnie Parker” contains vivid storytelling and spoken word parts from Poulsen. One of the most unique songs on the album is “Die To Live”, featuring not only Fallon, but also saxophone and piano. The most distinctive trait of Volbeat is the voice of frontman Michael Poulsen, who channels Elvis on “Pelvis on Fire” with a lot of swagger and attitude, and then does a complete 180 on the tender “7:24”, a song he wrote for his daughter. While the album definitely leans more rock than metal, guitarist Rob Caggiano provides some big riffs on “The Everlasting”, and aforementioned guest Holt brings the heavy with his solo on “Cheapside Sloggers”. The Good: Volbeat’s knack for writing songs with intriguing lyrics and memorable hooks continues with tracks like “Last Day Under the Sun” and the earnest arena rocker “Rewind the Exit”. Volbeat’s latest album finds the band writing some of their most accessible and catchy songs to date, while mixing in a few surprises to add variety, including guest spots from Clutch frontman Neal Fallon and Slayer / Exodus guitarist Gary Holt. ![]() Combining heavy riffs with a rockabilly vibe, Volbeat have become one of hard rock’s most successful acts over the past decade, with a string of hit rock singles and their last two albums cracking the Top 10 on the Billboard 200 chart. The Lowdown: Rewind, Replay, Rebound is the seventh studio album from Danish band Volbeat, and the first with bassist Kaspar Boye Larsen. Tomato late blight vs early blight12/8/2023 Testing disease response and horticultural type in SLS/EB/LB resistant lines and hybrids OUTCOME: This objective generates data & seed for other objectives. Combine genetic controls of the three major defoliating diseases of tomato, SLS, LB & EB in high quality tomato lines OUTCOME: Development of resistant tomato lines with good type and adaptation to the NE tomato growing regions. The objectives are: 1 & 2) Combine SLS, LB and EB resistance in elite tomato lines, testing disease response and horticultural 3 a & b) Determine efficacy of four fungicide treatments for disease control with & without genetic resistance (NY) then compare the best timings on lines with & without EB/LB/SLS resistances (NY, VA and NC) 4&5) Test EB/LB/SLS lines and hybrids in multiple sites (NY, WV) for control and horticultural properties. We address strobilurin resistance by selecting appropriate replacements, scheduling use (TOM-CAST), and assess how reduced sprays and plant resistance can improve control and reduce grower costs. This project unites breeders, pathologists, horticulturists, and conventional & organic growers in 4 states and two regions to meet priorities by developing LB/EB/SLS resistant tomatoes (adding SLS resistance to a LB/EB resistant line), and testing disease response of these lines with reduced sprays of low EIQ fungicides. Another priority is strobilurin resistance found in EB isolates in NY, NC. These diseases are high priorities in all NE states to the Southern region. Goals / Objectives This project targets improved control, with reduced pesticide load, of early blight (EB), late blight (LB), and Septoria leaf spot (SLS), in tomato in eastern US. The proper use of SLS/EB/LB hybrids in the IPM system will reduce use of chemical controls, shift to use of low EIQ chemicals, reduce growers costs of production, reduce risk associated with pesticide usage for agricultural workers and the environment, as well as risk of pesticide residue for consumers. The use of a system covering all three defoliating diseases will be more manageable rather that using separate IPM programs for each disease. This LB/EB/SLS control system would result in use of the lowest number of fungicidal sprays/season and the use of low EIQ fungicides, minimizing EIQ per season. Combined, this project will encourage "science-based pest management that safeguards human health & the environment" because it provides information and materials which create a coordinated strategy for controlling these three diseases. homozygous for SLS will inform the seed companies of how the SLS resistance must be present in their hybrids (homozygous or heterozygous), providing growers with the best hybrids. ![]() Information on the relative control achieved with the best fungicide program and hybrids heterozygous vs. ![]() The EB/LB/SLS tomato lines produced will enable seed companies to release triple resistant hybrids. This information will assist growers to select effective fungicides with lowest EIQs and use TOM-CAST. The results of trialing with pesticides, in multiple regions that include the strobilurin-resistant EB variant will be immediately applicable with current EB/LB resistant varieties. Therefore, this project also has overarching impacts. Although the is separated into 5 objectives, this project has one overarching objective: the coordinated control of EB/LB/SLS through the use of resistance to each of the diseases combined with a IPM strategy using minimal sprays of the lowest EIQ compounds. The 5 objectives are: Combine SLS, LB and EB resistance in elite tomato lines, Testing disease response and horticultural Determine efficacy of four fungicide treatments for disease control with & without genetic resistance (NY) Compare the best timings on lines with & without EB/LB/SLS resistances in NY, VA and NC Test EB/LB/SLS lines and hybrids in multiple sites for control and horticultural properties. This project unites breeders, pathologists, horticulturists, and conventional & organic growers in 4 states and 2 regions to meet priorities by developing LB/EB/SLS resistant tomatoes and testing disease response of these lines with reduced sprays of low EIQ fungicides. Another priority is strobilurin resistance in EB isolates in NY, NC. Excessive spraying increases growers costs, risk to the environment and rural community due to increased compound release, and risk for consumers due to risks of residuals. Many fungicide sprays are used in these regions to protect yields & quality. Non Technical Summary This project targets improved control, with reduced pesticide load, of early blight (EB), late blight (LB), and Septoria leaf spot (SLS) in tomatoes in the eastern US.
